Democracy Monitor Quarterly (DMQ) provides quarterly updates on the strength of democracy in individual countries. Each quarterly issue includes a pdf report containing scores, graphics, and information for three aggregated overall strength of democracy indicators, twelve disaggregated on-the-ground (in practice) strength of democracy indicators, and eleven disaggregated legal (in law) strength of democracy indicators. Each quarterly issue also includes an excel file that contains all DMQ scores formatted for data entry. New issues of DMQ are published three weeks after the close of each quarter (i.e., first quarter issues are released on April 21st).
Archived issues of Democracy Monitor Quarterly (DMQ) can be downloaded for free at the top of the page. We are no longer producing new issues of DMQ as we develop Democracy Ticker -- an online interactive dashboard that will allow users to create and export customized reports in the same vein as DMQ. Please visit the Democracy Ticker website to sign up to be notified when the dashboard launches.
Information You Can Count On
While there are a number of indices and countless individuals who provide information on how free and democratic countries are, DMQ is the best source for objective data that is produced by a tried and tested methodology grounded in academic theory and research.
Backed by Multidisciplinary Research, Case Study Testing, and Statistical Analysis
First presented at the 2010 International Society of Political Psychology (ISPP) Annual Conference, the methodology behind DMQ is grounded in academic theory and research and has been validated using statistical analysis and case study testing.
Flattau Associates developed the methodology behind DMQ over a two-year period while consulting with a number of individuals from academia, the development community, research institutions, governments, NGOs, and the private sector. Many of these individuals continue to serve on Flattau Associates' Advisory Board.
Increased Objectivity by Measuring Events Rather than Opinions
While there are many products that present experts' views on the strength of democracy in countries, DMQ is the best product for objective data since we generate our scores by measuring events and actions rather than surveying individuals' opinions.
Ensuring Reliability Through Country-Owned Peer Review
Every quarter, in-country peer reviewers - academics, reporters, and NGO workers on the ground in the countries we cover - examine DMQ indicator scores to reduce errors of omission, bias, or misinformation. Because of our proven methodology and our commitment to country ownership, we have been featured in a number of publications in the countries that we cover.
During our quarterly assessment, no analyst covers more than two countries, and all of our analysts have advanced degrees in international development or a related field.
Quarterly Data Provides a More Accurate Picture
Most democracy indices produce data once a year or once every two years and by the time information reaches you governance conditions in a country have long since changed. Because of the innovative methodology behind DMQ, you will have the most up-to-date and accurate information on the democratic conditions in countries.
Great for Spotting Trends and Gaining Expertise
Issues of DMQ include two years of historical data for every democracy indicator. Glance at DMQ's aggregated democracy indicators to quickly understand the overall democratic trends in a country, or scratch beneath the surface with disaggregated democracy indicators and see what areas of democracy fluctuate or remain stable in countries.
Thorough, In-Depth Analysis
In order to produce DMQ, our analysts sift through a wide range of primary and secondary source material and examine hundreds of events. Analysts' findings are then scrutinized by in-country peer reviewers in order ensure reliability.
Filter Out the Noise
The innovative methodology behind DMQ helps you filter out the noise of daily news reports and stay current on the key events that impact the strength of democracy in countries.
After our analysts conduct their assessments and in-country peer reviewers check their work, all the important information is then distilled in easy-to-read issues of DMQ so that you can quickly know the democratic situation in a country.
Used By Individuals and Organizations Across Sectors
Democracy and Human Rights Advocates use DMQ to plan strategies for advocacy campaigns, build coalitions, advocate for reforms, and evaluate and rapidly adapt program strategies to changing governance conditions.
Aid Donors use DMQ to identify and select countries for funding, monitor governments' commitment to democratic governance, and to outline steps governments can take to qualify for assistance.
Investors use DMQ to prepare for meetings and negotiations with partners, identify the risks and opportunities of investing in a country, plan business strategies, and rapidly adapt business strategies to changing governance conditions.
Multiple File Formats for Customization
DMQ issues include a PDF report and an excel data set file. The excel data set file allows users to easily drop DMQ scores into their own models and databases so that they can have the most up-to-date and reliable data on freedom and democracy in countries factored into their decision making process.
